The difference between Micarta and G10 is: Micarta is a high pressure laminate that (often) uses linen or canvas based fiber. G10 is an epoxy based high pressure laminate that used glass mat (think fiber glass) for the fiber base. G10 is tougher and more water resistant than Micarta. UltreX™ G10 is made from durable fiberglass and epoxy resin and is formed under high temperature and pressure. UltreX™ G10 has a small weave glass matte which gives the material a tight weave appearance once shaped and polished. There is more color separation between the layers than regular G10 which keeps the colors from blending together in multi-colored material and it provides a higher contrast look. It will buff to a very nice finish. UltreX™ G10 is produced in the USA.

Tip: This is glass based. Wear a respirator. Wear gloves when you are cutting it too. After cutting a bunch of it, I can feel several dozen little prickly glass threads in my hands.

Micarta® was the original knife handle material. But before that, it proved its toughness and durability in demanding electrical and mechanical industrial applications. Pioneered by the Westinghouse company for use in power generating and utility scale transformers, the Micarta® brand became synonymous with a specific style of laminated composite — paper and cotton fabric reinforced phenolic.

Now available in several different colors, combinations, and surface treatments, UltreX™ paper and cotton phenolic materials use the original production methods of Westinghouse, updated with today’s process and environmental controls. And unlike other “micarta” available in the market, UltreX™ Micarta® is produced in the USA.
