   Chromium  14.00%

   Niobium   0.50%

   Vanadium  3.00%

   Molybdenum  2.00%

CPM-S35VN is a particle metallurgy stainless steel made by Crucible Industries. It is a modified version of CPM-S30V with the vanadium content reduced by 1% and replaced by 0.5% niobium.

Knives made from S35VN will be tougher and less likely to chip than knives made from S30V. CPM-S35VN is a well balanced knife steel that offers good corrosion resistance, edge holding and better toughness than most stainless steels. It is a good steel to choose for almost any type of knife, including high quality hunting knives, kitchen knives, or folding knives.

Heat Treatment for CPM-S35VN

Wrap blade in stainless steel heat treat foil

Bring to 1550°F and equalize (let it soak for 10 minutes)

Bring it up to Austenitizing temp 2000° - 2025°F and hold for 15 minutes

Quench in air or plate quench.

A Cryo treatment in liquid nitrogen (or dry ice) before tempering will reduce retained austenite and increase hardness

Temper between 400°F twice for 2 hours each time. Cool to room temperature in between tempers.

Austenitizing at 2000°F followed by a Cryo treatment and tempering at 400°F should result in a hardness of 60-61 HRC
