Vanadis 8 SuperClean .179" Thickness
Uddeholm Vanadis 8 SuperClean
This is an “unobtanium” steel. It’s an exceptionally hard to find exotic super steel.
We waited for 4 months to track down 1 sheet of the stuff.
It’s expensive. It’s cool. It’s super tough and super wear resistant.
We had this waterjet down to 30” long strips in a few widths. We will be selling this only in 30” lengths to avoid awkward drop cuts.
This powder metal technology super steel has exceptional wear resistance coupled with exceptional toughness.
Have a look at the alloy content.
C 2.3
Si .4
Mn .4
Cr 4.8
Mo 3.6
V 8.0
What’s going to be different than most knife steels is the Mo (molybdenum) content and the high V (vanadium) content.
HRC64 is your target hardness and is where the Uddeholm engineers suggest you take this steel to.
To anneal
Ramp to 1650F and cool at 650F per hour. Basically run it to 1650f in your oven and turn it off.
Stress relieve
Hold at 1200F for 2 hours and cool slowly.
Hardening
Ramp to 1200F and hold 5 minutes
Ramp to 1600F and hold 5 minutes
Ramp to 2010F and hold for 15 minutes
Plate quench while shooting compressed air in between the plates.
Temper
Temper 2 hours twice, allowing steel to cool to room temperatures between tempers.
950F for 64HRC
Uddeholm recommends not to temper lower than 920F
We do not have data for cryo treatment although I suspect it might benefit from a soak in Ln overnight.
