Cru Forge V Steel by Crucible
This steel was developed by Crucible for the forging knife maker.
We buy this in 36" lengths and sell it in 12", 24", and 36"lengths.
If you buy 1, you will get a stick 12" long by the width and thickness shown.
If you buy 2, you will get a bar that is 24" in legnth.
If you buy 3, you will get a bar that is 36" in legnth.
**If you buy 2 or 3 and want 12" length pieces, please specify in the comments section that you would like them cut into 12" pieces.
**Advertised price is for 1qty 12" piece
Cru Forge V is a vandium modified high carbon blade steel specifically designed to offer the forgeability of carbon steels such as W1, 1086 or 52100, while providing improve wear resistance in finished blades. The addition of vanadium promotes the formation of hard vanadium carbides in the micro-structure, adding to the abrasive wear resistance of the material compared to plain high carbon steels.
It may be readily forged and heat treated using standards practices used for high carbon blade steels.
Forging: 1700F-2000F degrees. Do not forge below 1600F. Slow cool or anneal after forging.
Heat to 1450F degrees, hold long enough to make sure the temperature is uniform, slow cool to below 200F.
Preheat: heat to 1200-1250F degree, equalize.
Austenitize: Heat to 1500-1550F degrees. equalize. Quench in oil.
Temper: Double temper at 400-500F recommended. Approximate hardness after double tempering is shown below. Actual hardness will depend on hardening temperature and quench rate.
temper: 350 400 425 450 500 550 600
HRC: 62 61 59 58 58 56 55
